January 30th 2009 | Could new legislation to limit pesticides in Europe benefit farmers in the developing world?

International Supermarket News (ISN) argues that potential legislative changes that limit the amount of pesticides available in the EU could threaten European crop yields and ultimately food security and supply. The aim of the legislation is to improve food safety, but a report by ADAS states that if these regulations are adopted a 25% reduction in production of wheat, potatoes and green vegetables could result. The unintended consequences of this potential legislative change, is, however, that imported products become increasingly competitive as prices of European crops increase due to decreasing supply.
