Organic

January 28th 2009 | Could organic farming 'feed Africa'?

The debate over the potential of organic farming continues to rage. The Independent reports that organic farming has the potential to feed Africa - a bold statement some might argue. It reports on research carried out by the UN Environment Programme which argues that "traditional practices increase yield by 128 per cent in east Africa, says UN" and "that organic, small-scale farming can deliver the increased yields which were thought to be the preserve of industrial farming, without the environmental and social damage which that form of agriculture brings with it."
